- Celaire was the first person in Britain to be convicted of a crime for which he had been previously found not guilty by a jury, since the overturning of the 'double jeopardy' rule in 2005. Celaire admitted the manslaughter of his girlfriend Cassandra McDermott for which he had previously been tried and acquitted 6 years earlier.
Celaire attacked Miss McDermott after their relationship ended and either punched her or pushed her head into furniture, knocking her out. She choked to death on her own vomit.
The case was reopened after Celaire confessed the crime to another girlfriend, Kara Hoyte, in 2007 before attacking her with a hammer. The attack left her with significant disabilities, but she was able to communicate what Celaire had confessed, reopening the case.
The judge said: "You present a very real and continuing danger to young women with whom you enter into a close relationship." - Online Resources
