- Distinguishing Features / Details
- He made sham ('shill') bids on items he was selling via the online auction website ebay.
He used different ebay accounts to drive up prices on his goods and, where he was the 'successful' bidder he would post positive feedback on himself thereby misleading users of the auction into believing his reputation as a seller was good ('sock puppetry').
The judge said: "Had you had previous convictions for dishonesty the result would have been a custodial sentence. If you had profited to a substantial extent the sentence could well have been a custodial sentence... This sort of conduct strikes at the heart of that trust which is vital if this... useful commercial medium is to continue to operate successfully." - Mitigating & Aggravating Factors
