Distinguishing Features / Details
THIS SENTENCE HAS BEEN INCREASED IN APPEAL - Reference by the Attorney General under s.36 Criminal Justice Act 1988

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in West Parley, Dorset, on 9 May 2020. He was found not guilty of murder. He was having an affair with his 41-year-old victim when he strangled her after she sent a text message to his wife revealing the affair. His victim suffered a brain injury caused by compression of the neck and died later in hospital.

The judge said: "This is a case where I should sentence you on the basis you lost your self-control following the sending of the text message to your wife where the affair was revealed, rather than on the basis that you had no intention to kill or cause really serious harm. I am sure that you did deliberately take [the victim] by the neck applying significant force with your forearm or the crook of your elbow for a period of time while she struggled against you... You were a trained and experienced police officer ... Yet you did nothing to try to help"
